Conditions suitable for TCM pain treatment and management include headaches of various origins, pain of the face, neck, shoulder, upper limb, chest, back, lumbar and lower limbs, soft tissues and joint pain, pain due to peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome and peripheral vascular pain, among others.

Pain affects one’s physical and mental well-being. Effective pain management can ease the suffering and improve the quality of life of individuals living with pain.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries can affect bones and/ or tissues. It usually results from acute trauma or repetitive stress associated with athletic activities and affects not just competitive athletes, but also individuals who exercise on a recreational basis, and even certain occupations. A sprained waist due to incorrect posture during your Sunday golf game or the delivery man with a back injury from carrying heavy loads are examples of sports injuries.

Orthopedic Conditions

Orthopedic conditions range from disorders of the bones, joints, muscles and connective tissues, ligaments and cartilage.

Management of sports injuries and orthopedic conditions include prevention, diagnosis and treatment, with the main objective of expediting one’s recovery process, so that one recovers and is able to perform at a similar or better level before the injury.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), pain management is done with a combination of acupuncture, Tui Na and herbal medication where necessary. The advantage of TCM lies in its abilities to treat both the symptoms and root cause of the problem, leaving a lasting effect. The sides-effects are minimal and there is no risk of being addicted to medication. Acupuncture clears blockage within the meridians and strengthens the flow of qi and blood; it restores the healthy balance of Yin & Yang, hence alleviating pain. World Health Organization has recognized that acupuncture has been proven, through controlled trials, to be an effective treatment for various conditions such as facial pain, headache, knee pain, low back pain, neck pain, periarthritis of shoulder, postoperative pain, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, sprain, tennis elbow etc. 2

Tui Na aids the recovery of adhesions, dispersing blood stasis and swelling, and corrects dislocations. It stimulates the circulation of blood and repair of damaged tissue, hence relieving pain. For instance, tui na is used as a treatment for a variety of sprains, tennis elbow, cervical spondylosis, tenosynovitis, periarthritis of shoulder, shoulder impingement syndrome, strains and back pain, lumbar disc herniation, sacroiliac joint injuries.
